A Qualified Charitable Distribution (QCD) allows individuals who are 70½ or older to donate annually from an IRA directly to qualified 501(c)(3) charitable organizations, such as TAG Center, Inc.
What is a QCD? A QCD is an IRA Charitable Rollover. Congress passed this retirement arrangement in 2015, allowing taxpayers 70.5 years old and up to distribute cash from their traditional IRA accounts directly to charitable organizations without having to recognize it as income, so long as it is completed by December 31 of that year. With a QCD the taxpayer doesn't have to worry about meeting the standard deduction or itemizing deductions.
It is important to note that a Donor Advised Fund (DAF) cannot be the charitable recipient of a QCD. More acronyms! QCD’s are subject to limitations which donors should discuss with their tax advisor.
Your IRA administrator must make the distribution directly to the charity.
Can a QCD cover a person’s IRA Required Minimum Distribution (RMD)?
Yes, a QCD distribution can cover part or all of the individual’s RMD for the year, but the amount of the QCD is importantly not included in the adjusted gross income (AGI) for the year, as would be the case if the person took the RMD as a distribution paid directly to the person. (As a reminder, an RMD is a mandatory minimum withdrawal that individuals over the age of 73 are required to make each year, based on the prior end-of-year balance in their pre-tax requirement accounts. Interestingly, although the RMD age was pushed back from age 70 ½ to age 73 in 2023, the earliest age at which individuals can process QCDs remained 70½, so it is actually possible to begin doing QCDs prior to attaining RMD age.)
How to make an IRA Qualified Charitable Distribution (QCD)
Here are the steps to take to make a QCD gift from your IRA:
· Contact your IRA administrator and instruct that person to transfer funds to the charity you designate.
· For gifts to TAG Center, Inc. help us credit your gift and thank you by having your IRA administrator include your full name and mailing address on the gift. Also, have your administrator note that the transfer is an IRA Qualified Charitable Distribution. With QCD’s we do not encourage restricted gifts.
· If you'd like to make a QCD gift to support the TAG Center, your financial institution should make the check out to "TAG Center, Inc." and identify you as the donor by name and address. They can mail the check to:

What are planning options for IRA donations after death?
The most straightforward option for donations made after death is to name the charity or Donor Advised Fund (DAF) as a beneficiary of the IRA. You may list TAG Center, Inc. on a Beneficiary Designation Form. (If married, spouse is primary beneficiary and the charity is contingent beneficiary.)
Naming TAG Center, Inc. as a beneficiary on your retirement account is a simple way to support the great work of TAG Center, Inc. without changing your will or living trust. Beneficiary designation gifts pass directly to TAG Center, Inc. without going through the probate process.
Tax planning: Individuals who inherit (non-Roth) retirement plan assets are usually required to pay income tax on them, so they're often considered among the best assets to leave to charity.
To name TAG Center, Inc. as a beneficiary on your IRA ask your IRA administrator for a change of beneficiary form. Please list us as:
